Glycyrrhiza uralensis FABACEAE
Slightly woody herb has compound leaves with oil glands. Flowers white to violet-blue. Roots may be harvested the 3rd or 4th year. Root contains up to 24% glycyrrhizin, a substance 50 times sweeter than sugar. Medicinal: Corticosteroid action, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, expectorant, demulcent. May cause hypertension if overused.
